Carlos Carranza-Torres is an associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering. University of Minnesota, Duluth Campus (UMD). His interests are in the areas of engineering geology, rock mechanics, design of underground and surface excavations and analytical and numerical modelling in geotechnical engineering. He worked as a project engineer at Itasca Consulting Group. Minneapolis, Minnesota (1998-2005), and then worked as an independent geotechnical engineering consultant from 2005-2008 until he joined the University of Minnesota at Duluth Campus.

He is a former Member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering –technical journal of the Geo-Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, ASCE (2006-2009) and Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology –by Elsevier (2005-2010; and from January 2013 on). He was also an associate editor of Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology –by Elsevier (2010-December 2012).

He is a member of the editor board in the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences –by Elsevier (2004-Present), the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences –by Elsevier (2004-Present) and Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering –published by Springer (2007-Present) and the co-editor-in-chief of Engineering Geology –journal published by Elsevier (January 2013-Present).
