Professor Xu is the Committee Member of Academic Degrees （hydraulics）Committee of the State Council. He is also the member of Science Committee of Ministry of Education，leader of scientific research innovation team of Ministry of Education，executive member of the council of CSHE （Chinese Society of Hydroelectric Engineering），member of the council of CHES （Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society）. He is also an editorial member of Journal of Hydrodynamics and Water Science.
Professor Xu has mainly worked on the high dam hydraulics. He has undertaken more than 40 research projects, including key research projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation and"973 Plan”. He has also implemented several research programs supported by state science and technology and many other major national science and technology projects. He has published over 100 papers and 4 monographs. Additionally, dozens of prizes have been awarded to professor Xu, which included 1 second prize in “National Award for Technological Invention “, 2 second National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology, 5 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 2 third prizes for Provincial Progress in Science and Technology.
